The members of One Republic met as students in high school, and continue to collaborate today on some of hottest music on the airwaves. The group originally performed its music under the name This Beautiful Mess, but the group performed at one talent show and disbanded after about a week. From there, the duo devoted themselves to spending time as a team sharpening their skills as both musicians and songwriters.
In the summer between his junior and senior year of college, Ryan earned a record deal as the result of winning a songwriting contest on MTV. After turning down the record deal following the MTV contest, Ryan set out for Nashville, Tennessee to improve his skills as a songwriter.
Zach, on the other hand, had stayed in school to study aerospace engineering at a college in Illinois. In , both men found themselves back in Colorado and ready to give their musical career another shot as a duo. After deciding to give it another shot, the pair moved to Los Angeles. Within nine months of moving to Los Angeles the pair had signed a deal with Columbia Records.
The band underwent a number of lineup changes early on, but eventually it was determined that Ryan would do vocals, Zach would play guitar and do back-up vocals, and Eddie Fisher, Brent Kutzle, and Drew Brown joined the group. Fisher plays drums for the group, while Kutzle is featured on bass and cello, with Brown on guitar. OneRepublic then signed with Sony BMG's Columbia label in ; three years later, however, the bandmates returned from a performance at Coachella to find themselves dropped from Columbia's roster.
Nevertheless, OneRepublic 's popularity continued to soar on social media, and Tedder helped raise the group's profile by penning songs for artists like Hilary Duff and Blake Lewis. Hip-hop producer Timbaland with whom Tedder had already worked for several years took notice of the band's audience and signed OneRepublic to his own Mosley Music Group, a joint venture with Interscope Records.
Timbaland also remixed one of the group's most promising tracks, "Apologize," and included it on his own album, 's Timbaland Presents Shock Value. The song quickly became a platinum-selling single in many countries, breaking airplay records in the U. The album quickly went gold, and "Apologize" continued to top the singles charts in multiple countries.
Another Tedder -penned track, Leona Lewis ' "Bleeding Love," experienced similar success at the same time, thus making Tedder one of the year's most celebrated songwriters. OneRepublic began writing songs for a second album in , and the band later decamped to Colorado Springs to avoid outside distractions. Although initially planned for a summer release, Waking Up wasn't completed until September The album's lead single, "All the Right Moves," was released to radio that same month, and the album followed in November, charting in the U.
During the band's subsequent extensive world tour, a deluxe version of Native was released, featuring the hit "Love Runs Out," which reached number 15 on the Hot and was a Top Ten hit in several other countries.
