All that begs the question of why Katherine didn't kill Elena. Yes, she needed her alive for the ritual Klaus wanted to do, but after that, Elena was a fair game. But she's also calculating and intelligent so she must have realized that taking both Stefan and Damon as her lovers when she came to Mystic Falls would no doubt lead to problems.

It's easy to imagine that she could have fallen for him only to be shocked when she realized that he wanted to kill her and not marry her.
